Welcome to another edition of this Miri leg of reviews, today we pay a visit to the Mee Kolok Special P. Ramlee stall, inside City Curry House. If you’re ever in Sarawak, you’ll notice that the state is famous for noodle dishes. You’ve seen the Laksa Sarawak (featured earlier in the Batu Niah Food Court Centre), now we bring to you some of the other famous noodle dishes.
Environment:
This is basically your typical Malay restaurant. There are 3 tenants: one selling the drinks, the other sells the nasi campur (Mixed Rice), while the other stall sells the various noodle dishes.
Menu:
The mixed ride stalls literally sells your normal dishes, such as curry, vegetable, fried chicken, fishes etc, quite similar to what we have in Peninsular Malaysia. You just pick what you want to eat. I did try out their Pegedil (a ball made from chicken meat and potatoes, crusts are made from bread crumbs and eggs). I just couldn’t resist it.
The main attraction of the establishment is arguably the noodle stall – Mee Kolok Special P. Ramlee. There are 6 varieties of noodle dishes to choose from and I had the pleasure of trying out 3 of them.
The first of these is of course the flagship dish – Mee Kolok Special, which tastes almost like your normal Soy Sauce-less Wanton noodle. Then there is the Kempua Noodle, which has a tinge of sweetness to it. Mee Pok tastes almost like Mee Kolok, but it uses a different type of noodles.
To eat together with the noodles, you would serve with Steamed Chicken, not too different from your typical Hainan Chicken Rice’s chicken.
The establishment also serves your typical drinks such as coffee, tea, Bandung Syrup etc.
Service:
The service is quite fast – food would be served within 10 minutes.
Conclusion:
The Mee Kolok is arguably one of the more famous dishes in Sarawak, and it’s definitely one of the must-try dishes in Sarawak, and where better to do so than here. Also, do take note that noodle stall would be transferring to the nearby Cahaya Café after 2012 Aidilfitri.
Final verdict: 8/10
